The protagonist, Paul Safranek (played by Matt Damon), is a frustrated occupational therapist who decides to undergo downsizing surgery with his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) in search of a better life.
But after a trial, Audrey backs out at the last minute, leaving Paul alone. As he adjusts to life in the miniature community of Leisureland, he discovers unexpected complexities of his new life, including social dynamics and ethical dilemmas. He befriends Ngoc Lan (Hong Chau), a spirited Vietnamese activist who gives him a new perspective on life.
