Blitz is a 2011 crime thriller film that revolves around a serial killer targeting London police officers. It is directed by Elliot Lester and stars well-known action star Jason Statham as Sergeant Tom Brunt, who is tasked with catching the killer. The film begins with the murder of a police officer in broad daylight. It soon becomes clear that the killer is a sociopathic criminal named Barry Weiss, played by Aidan Gillen, who is targeting police officers to get revenge for past wrongdoings by the police. Brunt, who has a reputation as a hotheaded and unconventional officer, is assigned to the case along with his gay police partner Porter Nash (Paddy Considine). As Brandt and Nash begin to investigate Weiss and the murders, they discover that Weiss is much more cunning than they first thought. He is always one step ahead of them and able to outwit them at every turn. The killer becomes more and more brazen, attacking even more police officers and the city is terrorized by a serial killer.
Determined to catch Weiss at all costs, Brandt takes matters into his own hands and begins making reckless moves. Though his superiors warn him not to let his emotions cloud his judgement, Brandt’s thirst for revenge and justice drives him to extreme measures. As the death toll rises and Brandt’s personal demons come to the surface, Nash finds himself in the middle of Brandt and Weiss’s dangerous game. The film builds to an intense, unpredictable climax that will have you hooked.
Blitz is a well-made film that will keep you hooked until the very end. The action scenes are exciting and the performances from the cast are solid, especially Statham as a tough but flawed cop who isn’t afraid to take risks to get the job done. Considine has a great supporting role as Nash, the wiser and less impulsive member of the duo.
The film works well as a crime thriller, with several unexpected twists that keep the audience guessing until the very end. It also offers an insight into the darker side of policing and its effect on the mental health of officers.
