When John Coffey, a big but gentle man convicted of killing two young girls, arrives at the prison, he leaves a lasting impression on the guards. Though he appears frightening due to his size, Coffey has a special ability to heal others and feel their suffering. As Paul and his fellow guards see what Coffey can do, they start to question whether his punishment is fair and what guilt and innocence really mean.
The film explores themes of kindness, forgiveness, and the challenging decisions that those in power must face. It shows the connections formed between inmates and guards, highlighting the human side of a tough situation. Duncan’s portrayal of Coffey received much praise, while Hanks adds depth to Paul’s role.
